Project Summary
Set within the heart of Umhlanga’s medical precinct, this contemporary Mother and Child Clinic exudes a calm confidence through its sculptural form and refined façade articulation. The architecture is defined by softly curved corners, vertical fin elements, and full-height glazing that together create a serene and welcoming presence—an intentional counterpoint to the clinical rigidity of traditional healthcare buildings.
A palette of light-toned concrete, anodized aluminium, and high-performance glass emphasizes hygiene, durability, and visual transparency, allowing daylight to penetrate deep into waiting areas and consultation rooms. V-shaped columns animate the ground level while creating an elevated portico that shelters pedestrian access and activates the street edge. Internally, the building prioritizes spatial clarity and emotional comfort, with intuitive circulation, clear wayfinding, and soothing interior palettes tailored to the needs of both mothers and children. By pairing functionality with sculptural elegance, the clinic contributes a vital social infrastructure while affirming a new typology of healing architecture in Durban’s evolving urban context.
